What patios and walkways cover
Patios and walkways are the parts of a landscape you stand, sit, and walk on, and they decide how the whole yard is used day to day. A patio turns unused lawn into an outdoor room; a walkway settles the question of how you get from the driveway to the door or from the back steps into the garden. We work in Pennsylvania bluestone and irregular flagstone for a natural face, in brick for the older intown homes it suits, in porcelain and concrete pavers where crisp lines are wanted, and in decomposed granite for soft, informal garden paths. The material sets the mood, but the layout does the real work.
Getting the route right is mostly about width and destination. A primary walk to a front door wants to be generous enough for two people; a garden path can narrow and wander. Patios are sized to the furniture and the gathering they are meant to hold, not to a number picked in the abstract. Every surface is pitched a degree or two to shed water away from the foundation, because a flat patio that ponds is a patio that grows algae and heaves. Edges are restrained so the field cannot creep, and joints are chosen to match the look, tight for a formal terrace, planted or graveled for a relaxed path.
Our process for this service
01 · Design the route. We walk the way you actually move through the property, then set the widths, destinations, and patio footprint so the paths lead somewhere and the sitting areas land where you want to be.
02 · Excavate and base. We dig to depth, build and compact the aggregate base, and set the pitch for drainage before a single unit is placed, since a walking surface has to stay flat and dry to be worth having.
03 · Set and joint. We lay the pattern the design calls for, cut cleanly around beds and curves, restrain the edges, and finish the joints so the surface locks together and holds.
What’s included
A patio or walkway project includes the paving material, the compacted base and drainage pitch beneath it, the edge restraint that keeps it true, and the jointing that finishes it. Because the same studio designs, builds, and maintains the yard, a new path is drawn to meet the beds and grades already there, and a patio is placed to catch the sun or the shade you actually want at the hour you use it. The result is meant to feel like it was always part of the yard, not set down on top of it.
